Beskrivelse

Den ubebodde øya Elafonisi er riktignok liten, men den er full av naturlig skjønnhet og kulturelle rikdommer. Topolia-ravinen, Agia Sofia-grotten, Chrissoskalitissa-klosteret og en strand mange anser som den beste på øya er blant høydepunktene på denne utflukten. Rena, en av lokalguidene våre, sier: "Denne turen kombinere det beste fra det kretiske høylandet med den idylliske rosa sandstranden Elafonissi på sørkysten".

Det blir en rolig start på dagen når vi stopper for en liten kaffepause i en familiedrevet bodega i landsbyen Voulgaro. Deretter fortsetter vi med en kjøretur sørover gjennom Topolia-ravinen. Utsikten over den dype ravinen til venstre for deg er episk. Deretter besøker vi grotten Agia Sofia som er kjent for sine dryppsteiner. En rekke legender sier at hovavtrykket til St George-hesten finnes her. Hvis du ser godt etter, vil du finne noe som ser ut som et hesteskoavtrykk i en stein.

Neste stopp er Chrissoskalitissa-klosteret. Det er bygget på en høyde med utsikt over kysten, og dette 1000 år gamle klosteret byr på tidløs sjarm. Navnet betyr "det gylne trinn" og er gjennomsyret av legender. Ifølge noen er ett av trinnene gyllent, men det er bare synlig for de religiøse.

Det siste stoppet er like vakkert som et postkort. Rena sier: " Du kan nå Elafonissi-øya ved å gå gjennom en grunn vannstrekning fra Elafonissi-stranden". Vi tilbringer ettermiddagen med å bade, slappe av og nyte den fantastiske utsikten, før vi avslutter dagen i fiskerlandsbyen Paleochora.

Over the course of the day, you'll taste locally produced olive oil, enjoy a typical Cretan lunch, and sip on regional whites and reds at an award-winning winery.We'll begin our culinary adventure at the Kriti Allios olive oil producer, set among olive groves to the south of Heraklion. Here we'll tour the facilities and surrounding groves before a Cretan olive oil tasting session. ‘Olive oil has been a Cretan staple since Minoan times. Archeologists have found evidence that the Minoans, the earliest Cretan civilization, used olive oil for rituals, medicine and culinary purposes,' adds Veta. After the tasting, there's a tasty farm fresh lunch to tuck into with traditional local delicacies.Next, we'll pay a visit to family-run Titakis Winery. Its wines have won multiple awards in the past decade, especially the Kotsifali reds. After a tour of the estate and the wine production areas, you'll taste four different wines, accompanied by breadsticks and olives. Veta says, ‘There's always a bottle on the dinner table in Cretan homes – and often it'll be from this winery. The Titakis family has a strong focus on the production of rare local varieties.'
