Att göra – San Giorgio Maggiore
Belägen framför katedralen i San Marcos ligger ön, en av de emblematiska platserna i Venedig. Den fick sitt namn av kyrkan tillägnad Sankt Göran som byggdes på 900 -talet.
Från och med 982 blev ön och klostret ett viktigt andligt och kulturellt centrum i staden.
Efter den venetianska republikens fall 1797 användes klostret som en militär kasern och fängelse, ön upplevde en lång period av förfall och försummelse. På 1950 -talet restaurerade Giorgio Cini sin prakt genom att restaurera komplexet.
På ön finns huvudkontoret för Giorgio Cini Foundation och det internationella kulturcentret. I byggnaderna finns utrymmen för utställningar, konserter, konferenser och möten, samt ett bibliotek specialiserat på konsthistoria.
