Garajonay National Park boasts pristine woodlands which are over 60 million years old, and they are undoubtedly a highlight of a visit to La Gomera. The visitor centre is the place to find out more about the unique botany and history of Garajonay. In Icod de Los Vinos, you'll admire the centuries-old dragon tree, with some free time to wander around the town. Garachico – often called the ‘prettiest and unluckiest' – awaits with some interesting history. Devastated by a volcanic eruption in 1706 and rebuilt on its lava, it's now famous for natural lava pools, guarded by a volcanic rock castle, where locals and visitors alike come to bathe. When it's time to take a break, there's a tasty local lunch, served in a family-run restaurant in a traditional finca. Teno Rural Park showcases the island's rich biodiversity and is known as the source of Tenerife's top-quality natural produce. As you climb, you'll pass through four different climate zones, which create an ever-changing kaleidoscope of terrains, flora and fauna. And because of its geological importance, the park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Juana says, ‘The park boasts a variety of camera-grabbing landscapes. There's the scorched earth of the lava fields, the jagged rock formations of Roques de Garcia, the Mars-like badlands around Montaña Rajada and the pine forests of the Corona Forestal.'As an optional extra, you can avail of the cable car service to just below the summit of the volcano. From this altitude, weather permitting, you can enjoy head-spinning views over Tenerife and the rest of the Canary archipelago jutting up from the Atlantic. Alternatively, you might get to see the famous ‘sea of clouds' that often hovers beneath the summit.
