Fästningen Hohensalzburg står högt över barockstaden Salzburg. Som ett landmärke synlig från fjärran är slottet en omisskänbar del av den världsberömda silhuetten av Salzburg. Som den största helt bevarade slottet i Centraleuropa lockar fästningen miljontals turister varje år.
Ärkebiskopen Gebhard lät bygga fästningen 1077 för att skydda Furstendömet och ärkebiskopar från fientliga attacker. Omkring 1500, under ärkebiskop Leonhard von Keutschach gavs fästningen dess nuvarande utseende. Under alla dessa år var det aldrig ockuperat av utländska trupper. Numera kan turister besöka en av de många museerna, som fästningmuseet, Marionettmuseet, Altes Zeughaus och Rainer regims museum, eller vandra längs de sammansatta väggarna och beundra den mest hisnande utsikten över Salzburg.
