Att göra – Centre Pompidou
Projektet Centre Pompidou var inledningsvis en idé för att vara en stor, fri och allmänt offentligt bibliotek som fram till mitten av 1900-talet saknades i staden Paris. Samtidigt var stadens Museum of Modern Arts, eller Musée National D'Art Moderne i stort behov av ett nytt hem.
På uppdrag av dåvarande presidenten i Frankrike Georges Pompidou (vars namn så småningom gavs till detta kulturcentrum) vann en arkitekttävling började rätten att planera och bygga den nya strukturen.
Ett team på två italienska och en brittisk arkitekt vann och gav liv åt vad som idag anses vara en mycket avantgardistisk byggnad som omfamnar framtiden. Från början mottogs det inte väl av allmänheten och kritiker eftersom det hade skapat en stark estetisk konflikt med det omgivande området. Man kan säga att dess yttre "väggar" saknas, att det lämnat ett utsatt skelett av byggnaden, med färgglada rör av de mekaniska system synlig för alla. På senare tid är det en struktur som har prisats som en stor innovation av arkitektonisk tanke i sin helhet.
På tiden av konstruktion var IRCAM, ett center för musik och akustisk forskning, redan där och är i dag också en integrerad del av Centre Georges Pompidou.
