At the time, it was one of Germany's largest construction projects: Düsseldorf's Wehrhahn Line. It went into operation in 2016 and has since completed the Düsseldorf underground network. A magnificent work of art! Its six underground stations are not only connected by tracks, but also by the visions of six artists.
‘Art and magic in a German metro' was the headline in the New York Times on the occasion of the opening of the 3.4-kilometre-long Wehrhahn Line. Laying the tracks underground has not only relieved traffic congestion in Düsseldorf city centre. The art city of Düsseldorf is breaking new ground with its underground. Find out how fascinating this is on this tour!
Six underground stations*, six artists – that's the creative concept. In collaboration with the city, architects and engineers, former students of the Düsseldorf Art Academy have succeeded in anchoring art in the everyday lives of over 50,000 passengers a day – with completely different ideas.
Here, the underground station becomes a world of sound, there a space station, and at the next stop, a steel poem awaits you – or is it a riddle? Discover yourself as the protagonist and experience how the ‘continuum' also connects the individual stations aesthetically. Art along the entire (Wehrhahn) line!
