Att göra – Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
Många besökare på ön häpnar när de ser den majestätiska Sheikh Zayed-moskén i orörd vit marmor, för första gången. Byggnaden är arkitektoniskt mästerverk av enorma proportioner, det har 880 kupoler, 1000 pelare och plats för upp till 40 000 tillbedjare. Det är ett främsta exempel på modern islamisk arkitektur och var både den avlidne presidenten Sheik Zayed bin Sulta Al Nahyans stora vision och hans sista viloplats.
Moskén har blandat influenser från mamlukiska, ottomanska, fatimidiska och indo-islamiska arkitektoniska stilar med de mer samtida och har involverat hantverkare över hela världen. Resultatet är ett imponerande landmärke för superlativer. Det är inte bara den största moskén i landet, den gör också anspråk på följande: den största mosaiken i världen, den största mattan och den tredje största ljuskronan med hela 11 ton bländande Swarovski-kristaller och 24-karat galvaniserat guld.
Lyckligtvis för många är det också en av få moskéer i landet där icke-muslimer får komma in. Kom dock ihåg att respektera moskéns etikett genom att bära långa löst sittande byxor eller kjolar, fotlånga byxor, långa ärmar och huvudduk för kvinnor.

“Die E Sportplattform war komplett gesperrt. Das ist eigentlich ein absolutes nogo. Schade das wir das nicht früher gewusst haben. Dann wäre diese Ausflug komplett gekanselt worden.”
“There is very little information on this tour. Would have been helpful to know that ladies visiting the mosque should be fully covered head to toe and not wear anything see-through or sheer. Told we would see the palace but it was from the other side of the river, not quite the view we envisaged. Visited a shop portrayed as a 'local gallery' and sat in a room where they tried to sell carpets to us. Then taken to a shop selling different types of dates, again, another sales pitch. Disappointing”
“Die Ausschreibung „Moschee und Heritage Village“ wurde geboten. Leider war der Ausstellungsteil im Village geschlossen, nur die Verkaufsstände geöffnet. Anschließend ein Mittagessen schlechter Qualität zum Aufpreis von 25,-€ pP, welches 1 h in Anspruch nahm (man wurde gefragt, ob man das möchte aber eine Alternative gab es nicht). Danach direkter Rückweg. Hier bot der Reiseleiter halbherzig weitere Möglichkeiten an, riet aber zur Rückfahrt. Leider bekam man keinen Überblick von Abu Dhabi!”
