Det praktfulle Alcázar ligger i hjertet av Sevilla, og et er UNESCO-listet kongepalass, kjent for sin uvanlige blanding av maurisk og renessansekristen design. Ikke bare er det et godt eksempel på Mudéjar-arkitektur, det er også et av verdens eldste slott som fortsatt er i bruk, besøkt av medlemmer av den spanske kongefamilien og besøkende statsoverhoder. Det siste som har gjort det kjent var at det dukket opp i Game of Thrones.
Palasset representerer utviklingen av selve byen, med en mangfoldig stil som gjenspeiler dets mange mestere. Det begynte som en festning i 913, deretter ble det gjort beboelig for abbadidene og senere utvidet ytterligere under almohadene. Til slutt, etter erobringen av Sevilla av Fernando III i 1248, oppnådde det sin siste inkarnasjon som et kongelig palass (en status som det fortsetter å opprettholde). Den fortsatte å gjennomgå ytterligere utvidelser og endringer for å passe monarkenes behov. I løpet av de fem hundre årene med konstruksjon avløste ulike arkitektoniske stiler hverandre. Av denne grunn er det i dag en slående kombinasjon av islamsk, barokk, gotisk og renessansepåvirkning.
Komplekset er omfattende, så det er lurt å planlegge besøket på forhånd og beregne god tid. Høydepunktene inkluderer Palacio de Don Pedro, som uten tvil er den mest kjente og arkitektonisk imponerende, og den overdådige Salón de Embajadores, som opprinnelig var Pedro I sitt tronsal. De viltvoksende hagene, komplett med en hekklabyrint, er også vel verdt en spasertur. Blant eksotiske planter, appelsintrær, palmetrær, fontener og paviljonger finner du hjørner fulle av fascinasjon, som Mercury-dammen, Grotesque Gallery eller Dansens hage. Alcázar i Sevilla åpner kl. 09.30 fra mandag til søndag. Fra 15. september til 31. mars stenger det kl. 17.00, og fra 1. april til 12. september stenger det kl. 19.00.
