Muir Woods National Park is located north of San Francisco. The national park is famous for its giant sequoias trees, some more than a thousand years old and reaching up to 250 feet high. It is one of the last of the historic redwoods that remain in the Bay Area and therefore has been protected as a National Monument since 1908.
The park is named after John Muir, a conversationist and the so-called father of the national parks. The land has been donated for the monument by William Kent who insisted the monument would be called after Mr. Muir.
In the park, you can find 380 different types of plants and animals such as bobcats, slugs, grey foxes, deer, and butterflies. Follow one of the many walking trails to stroll under the majestic trees. Bring your cameras, there will be plenty of photo ops!
You will find a total of 6 km of trails with various routes through the park all marked on the park map. The paths vary from easy 30-minute or 1-hour walks accessible for strollers and wheelchairs up to longer hiking trails of up to 7-hours passing through the neighboring national parks.
You can visit Muir Woods National Park all year during the opening times. Pair your Muir Woods tour with a visit to Alcatraz or a wine excursion at one of the nearby wineries. Keep in mind that pets are not permitted inside and plan your visit ahead.
