Marienplatz ligger der gågaten begynner ved hovedtorget i sentrum av München. På midten av plassen finner du Mariensäule, jomfruens søyle, som plassen ble oppkalt etter. I nord domineres plassen av et nytt rådhus og i øst, det gamle rådhuset.
Siden München ble grunnlagt, gjort av Henrik Løve i 1158, har Marienplatz vært byens sentrum. Her møtes de to viktigste gatene, noe som har vært avgjørende for byens utvikling og liv gjennom århundrer.
