The Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos is one of the most important monuments of Cordoba. The construction of this defensive complex was ordered by King Alfonso XI de Castilla in 1328. It offers the visitor magnificent gardens and courtyards that maintain the original traditions. It is one of the most visited places of interest in the city along with the Mosque and the Synagogue. In 1931 it was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest and is part of the historic center of Cordoba, which in turn was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994. The Catholic Monarchs spent more than eight years in this fortress and from here they led the campaign against the Kingdom of Granada. In the Tower of Homage, Christopher Columbus requested funds for his maritime adventure in 1486.
