Retken kuvaus

Kypros on täynnä kauniiden kylien täplittämiä rinteitä. Tällä vain aikuisille tarkoitetulla retkellä vierailet Kourionin raunioilla, kiertelet Omodoksen kylässä ja nautit viininmaistajaisista. Eva, yksi paikallisoppaistamme, kertoo retkestä: "Päivän aikana vaellat historian, kulttuurin ja mytologian kerrosten läpi".

Sukellat suoraan menneisyyteen Kourionissa, joka on yksi Kyproksen vaikuttavimmista arkeologisista kohteista. Vieraile roomalaisissa kylpylöissä ja kävele paikan keskipisteeseen, kreikkalais-roomalaiseen teatteriin. Siellä järjestetään yhä tänäkin päivänä konsertteja. Seuraavaksi on vuorossa 1400-luvulta peräisin oleva Kolossi-linna. Tätä ristiretkeläisten rakentamaa linnoitusta ympäröivät kukkivat kasvit.

Sitten suuntaamme vuorten ympäröimään Omodokseen, jossa nautit lounaan perheomisteisessa tavernassa, minkä jälkeen vierailemme vuoristossa sijaitsevassa Omodoksessa vaeltamassa bysanttilaisten rakennusten reunustamilla kapeilla mukulakivikaduilla. Se on Evan suosikkikylä. Hän sanoo: "Kivitalojen viehätysvoima, hiljaisuus ja rauhallisuus on kuin satukirjasta. Minusta on ihanaa piipahtaa jossain kahvilassa ja nähdä paikallisten käyvän filosofisia keskusteluja, poliittisia väittelyjä ja juoruavan." Lopuksi viininmaistajaisissa opit kaiken makeasta commandaria-viinistä, joka on yksi maailman vanhimmista lajikkeista.

Cyprus is all rolling hills dotted with pretty villages. On this adults-only tour, you'll see where a legend was born, visit the ruins of Kourion, venture to the village of Omodos and cap off the day with a wine tasting. Eva, one of our local guides, says of this excursion, ‘You'll wander through layers of history, culture and mythology.'You'll dive straight into the past at Kourion, one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Cyprus. Visit the Roman baths and amble into the site's centrepiece, the Greco-Roman theatre. Concerts are still held to this day. While the mosaics of the trio of excavated houses known as those of Eustolius, the Gladiators and Achilles are as impressive as when they were laid down. The 15th-century Kolossi Castle is up next. This steeped-in-legend Crusader-built fortress is nowadays surrounded by blooming plants. Then, we'll head for a local lunch in a family-run taverna before visiting mountain-fringed Omodos where you'll wander around skinny cobbled streets lined with Byzantine buildings. It's Eva's favourite village. She says, ‘The charm of the stone houses, the tranquillity and peace. It's as if it has sprung from a fairytale. I love dropping into one of the cafés and seeing locals have philosophical discussions, political arguments and a bit of gossip.' To finish, there's a wine tasting session, where you'll learn all about sweet commandaria wine – one of the oldest varieties in the world.

On this trip, you'll explore the Akamas peninsula by land and sea. And, rather than your typical coach set-up, you'll be in a 4x4 vehicle. The area is known for its natural beauty, so you're in for a real treat. Your day begins at Avakas Gorge, perhaps Cyprus' most impressive natural wonder, with a half-hour walk through its deep canyon with sheer walls of limestone that form a natural, narrow tunnel. Other star turns include Lara Beach, where a turtle conservation project has been protecting sea turtles for decades, enjoying lunch not far from Latchi harbour, and then a boat trip to the Blue Lagoon where you can take a dip in water so clear you'll see your toes.

Akamas Peninsula 4x4 Winter Tour

There's only one way to explore Cyprus's last wilderness – in a 4x4 vehicle. This off-road adventure will take you on a bumpy ride through the rugged Akamas peninsula. You'll get to see the wildlife-rich Avakas Gorge and Lara Bay, visit Port Latchi and the mythical Baths of Aphrodite. An action-packed day.Home to more than 160 species of birds and almost 40 species of plants, the entire peninsula is a national park. There are no main roads – just dirt tracks and pathways. The fun kicks off with a drive to the giant limestone walls of the Avakas Gorge. Next up is Lara Bay. This very remote spot – even by Akamas peninsula standards – is home to a breeding station for protected green turtles.It's time to rev up the engine again for a trip to Port Latchi. You'll sail from the Old Port in Limassol towards the most southerly point on the island for some much-deserved relaxation time with your loved ones on this calming catamaran cruise.Hop aboard in Limassol and grab yourself the best spot for stretching out on deck or on the nets and topping up your tan. Your captain and crew will steer the way south, towards Cape Gata, so that you'll not need to lift a finger all day. Local drinks are on tap too, including juices, wine and beer, so you can sip away as you admire the ever-changing landscape.And once the heat gets too much, there'll be a couple of stops for swimming, snorkelling or just taking a dip to cool off.
