The island of Spinalonga is actually a little island – rock, just 850 meters round the gulf of Elounda. It was firstly inhabited by Christians who used the island as a hiding place during the Roman occupation of Crete. In 1575 the Venetians constructed there a most impressive fortress, which was later converted into a colony for the lepers, all of which you will get to explore with your knowledgeable guide.
After that you will return to Elounda, for lunch in one of the traditional taverns and then a visit to Agios Nikolaos city is waiting for you to round off the day.
