Den spektakulære ø Burano blev berømt for håndlavede kniplinger i det 16. århundrede. Selvom kniplingeproduktion på øen faldt i det 18. århundrede, blev det genoplivet i det 19. århundrede, da en skole for kniplingeproduktion blev åbnet. I dag sidder kunsthåndværkerne ved dørene i deres farverige huse og fletter de mest imponerende kniplinger.
