Alcatraz er en den gamle fængselsø beliggende i San Francisco, Californien. Officielt har ingen nogensinde undsluppet fra Alcatraz. Uofficielt tror mange mennesker, at Frank Lee Morris - en kriminel med livtidsdom - gjorde det umulige i 1962 efter to år som fange der. Hans fantastiske historie blev gjort berømt i Clint Eastwood-filmen fra 1979, Flugten fra Alcatraz.
Morris havde allerede undsluppet fra en række fængsler, da han ankom til The Rock i 1960. Med et par andre fanger begyndte han at samle materialer til at lave værktøjer, der ville blive brugt til at grave ind i fængslets ventilationssystem. Gruppen fabrikerede også flåder fra regnfrakker, livagtige dukker, og endda en elektrisk boremaskine fra en støvsugermotor.
På dagen for flugten kom Morris' gruppe gennem en skakt på taget og kravlede ned af et rør. De blev aldrig set igen. Nogle siger, at mændene druknede i det kolde vand i San Francisco Bay, selvom ingen lig endeligt blev identificeret. Et skib rapportede at have set et lig iført fængselslignende tøj, men dette opstod kun måneder efter, og FBI konkluderede, at flugtforsøget var mislykkedes.

Øen er åben for offentligheden hele året, undtagen til Thanksgiving, Jul og Nytårsdag. Færgen afgår hver halve time fra 08:45 fra Piers 31-33, med den sidste tilbagevenden fra Alcatraz kl. 16:40, medmindre du er på aftenrundturen.
