Ting at foretage sig på Giant’s Causeway
Giants Causeway ligger i County Antrim på den nordlige kyst af Nordirland, omkring 5 km nordøst for byen Bushmills. Som et af de mest populære turistmål i Nordirland blev det erklæret UNESCO Verdensarvssted i 1986 og betragtes som et af de største naturlige vidundere i Storbritannien.
Med Atlanterhavets hårde, brusende bølger og den slående klippebesatte kyststrækning er Giants Causeway et unikt og fascinerende sted at opleve. Området består af omkring 40.000 basaltsøjler, der dannes som direkte resultat af et vulkanudbrud for over 60 millioner år siden. Toppene af søjlerne har for det meste en sekskantet form og danner trædesten, der fører fra klintens kant ned til havet, hvor de forsvinder under overfladen af vandet. De højeste søjle er omkring 12 meter høje, og det størknede lava er omkring 30 m tyk på visse steder.
Ifølge folklore er søjlerne, stående den dag i dag, resterne af en vejdæmning bygget af en irsk kæmpe ved navn Fionn Mac Cumhaill efter, at han var blevet udfordret til en kamp af en skotsk kæmpe ved navn Benandonner.
