Schönbrunnin palatsilla on rikas historia, joka ulottuu yli 300 vuoden päähän, saksalais-roomalaisen keisarin Maximilian II:n metsästysmaasta Habsburgien ylelliseen kesäasuntoon. Nykyään se on Wienin kuuluisa symboli ja kaupungin ykkösnähtävyys, ja vuodesta 1996 lähtien tämä ylellinen barokkipalatsi on kuulunut Unescon maailmanperintökohteisiin.
Palatsin 1441 huoneesta 40 on tällä hetkellä avoinna yleisölle, ja ne vaihtelevat koristeellisista salongeista rokokoo-huoneisiin ja keisari Franz Joosefin ja hänen vaimonsa keisarinna Elisabetin (eli Sisin) asuinsviitteihin. Ihaile ylellisiä sisätiloja, jotka eivät ole juurikaan muuttuneet keisarinna Maria Teresian valtakauden jälkeen, äläkä jätä väliin historiallisia huoneita, kuten peilisalia, jossa kuusivuotias Mozart esiintyi keisarinnalle vuonna 1762.
Kompleksia ympäröivät valtavat puutarhat, jotka ovat myös näkemisen arvoisia. Ne ovat olleet avoinna yleisölle vuodesta 1779, ja sieltä löytyvät muun muassa Orangerie, maailman vanhin eläintarha, kukkulan laella sijaitseva Gloriette ja hieman harhaanjohtavasti roomalaisiksi raunioiksi nimetty puutarha. Vaikka puisto on ilmainen, joihinkin yksittäisiin nähtävyyksiin vaaditaan pääsylippu. Kesäisin palatsissa on myös tapana olla tungosta, joten liput kannattaa ostaa netistä etukäteen.
