Virallisesti kukaan ei koskaan paennut Alcatrazista. Epävirallisen tiedon mukaan monet uskovat, että elämäntaparikollinen Frank Lee Morris teki mahdottomasta mahdollista ja pakeni vankilasta vuonna 1962, istuttuaan kaksi vuotta Alcatrazin vankilassa. Hänen uskomattomasta tarinastaan tehtiin vuonna 1979 kuuluisa Clint Eastwoodin elokuva Pako Alcatrazista.
Morris oli jo paennut useista vankiloista saapuessaan saarelle vuonna 1960. Muutaman muun vankitoverinsa kanssa hän alkoi kerätä materiaalia työkalujen valmistamiseksi, joita käytettäisiin vankilan ilmanvaihtojärjestelmään pääsemiseksi. Ryhmä valmisti myös lautat sadetakeista, elävän näköiset nuket ja jopa sähköporan pölynimurin moottorista.
Pakopäivänä Morris joukkoineen pakeni katon tuuletusaukosta ja laskeutui piippua pitkin alas. Kukaan ei nähnyt heitä enää koskaan tämän jälkeen. Jotkut uskovat että miehet hukkuivat San Franciscon kylmiin vesiin, vaikka ruumiita ei koskaan löydetty. Eräs laiva raportoi nähneensä ruumiin, jolla oli vankilatyyliset vaatteet. Tämä ilmeni vasta kuukausia myöhemmin ja FBI päätteli pakoyrityksen epäonnistuneen.
