Mitä kaikkea voit tehdä kohteessa Pompidou-keskus
Pariisista puuttui 1900-luvun puoliväliin saakka yleiseen käyttöön tarkoitettu ilmainen kirjasto, johon tarkoitukseen Pompidou-keskus alunperin suunniteltiin. Samanaikaisesti kaupungin modernin taiteen museo, Musée National d’Art Moderne, tarvitsi kipeästi uutta kotia. Ranskan silloisen presidentin Georges Pompidoun (jonka mukaan rakennus on nimetty) tilaaman arkkitehtuurikilpailun ratkettua, aloitettiin uuden rakennelman suunnittelu ja rakennustyöt.
Suunnittelukilpailun voitti italialais-brittiläinen arkkitehtikaksikko, jotka loivat tulevaisuuden avantgarde-rakennuksen. Rakennus herätti suurta keskustelua yleisön, sekä kriitikoiden keskuudessa. Keskuksen esteettisyys riiteli ympäröivän alueen kanssa ja kaikki mikä normaalisti pyritään piilottamaan, oli jätetty näkyville. Voidaan sanoa että ulkoseinät puuttuvat, jättäen rakennuksen ”luurangon”, eli kirkkaanväriset putket ja rakennelmat näkyville. Viime aikoina kompleksia on ylistetty suurena arkkitehtonisena innovaationa.
Rakentamisaikana IRCAM – musiikintutkimuslaitos sijaitsi jo nykyisellä paikallaan ja on nykyään myös osa Pompidou-keskusta.
