Montmartren kaupunginosa, joka sijaitsee 130 metriä Pariisin yläpuolella samannimisellä kukkulalla, oli ennen kylä Pariisin pohjoispuolella, kunnes se liitettiin kaupunkiin vuonna 1860 ja siitä tuli yksi pääkaupungin kuuluisimmista kaupunginosista. Sen tärkein maamerkki on vuonna 1873 rakennettu Sacré Cœurin eli pyhän sydämen basilika, joka on kuuluisa roomalais-bysanttisesta arkkitehtuuristaan. Aikoinaan Montmartren kaupunginosa oli kuuluisa tuulimyllyistään. Niitä oli vuonna 1786 peräti kymmenkunta, ja niillä jauhettiin silloin vehnää, kipsiä ja kiviä. Tuulimyllyt olivat pariisilaisten suosikkinähtävyys; he menivät Montmartreen aurinkoisina sunnuntaipäivinä kävelemään, juomaan viiniä sadonkorjuun jälkeen, syömään ja tanssimaan. Montmartre tunnetaan taiteellisena alueena, joka on aina inspiroinut monia kirjailijoita, säveltäjiä, muusikoita ja tanssijoita. Tunnetuimpia olivat Toulouse-Lautrec, Utrillo, Picasso, Renoir, Van Gogh, Dalida, Boris Vian, Jacques Prévert ja Serge Gainsbourg.
