With thick walls of stone and tall tower turrets, the castles of Scotland have guarded the Highlands for centuries. Many were built for defense, helping kings and dukes establish their rule over the land, while others were lavish country homes, built more for style than practical defense. Several castles have seen bloody battles and turned the tides in epic wars. They have become a steadfast part of Scottish history and are something you can’t miss!
Edinburgh Castle is one of the most famous, looming over the city on a mighty hilltop. Fans of the TV series Game of Thrones will recognize Doune Castle and watchers of Downton Abbey will have seen Inveraray Castle in a Christmas Episode. Stirling Castle is another important castle to visit, large and impressive in one of the most strategic points in the country.
